Bikes, bourbon and pushing your limits..
Rider of the Week!
RM3: Tell us a little about yourself and what makes you, you?
I am just a normal dude obsessed with bikes, animals and bourbon. Not necessarily in that order. When i am not trying to keep up with my wife on a ride, you can normally find me somewhere drinking bourbon and petting puppies.
RM3: When did you start cycling and when did you realize you really enjoyed it?
Around the age of 26 I started riding around the city on a Fixie while wearing skinny jeans and smoking cigarettes. It was a fun period of my life but not necessarily the most productive and I certainly didn't take it very seriously. At the age of 28 I had a roommate that was a pretty serious cyclist and he started inviting me out to group rides. Shortly after that, the Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill opened so I went and got certified to train and race on the 250 track. I immediately fell in love with the speed and tactics required for racing. I put down the cigarettes and cut back on the booze a little, as they say... the rest is history.
RM3: What drives / motivates you to succeed in cycling and in life?
My wife. She is my biggest supporter and a pretty big reason I train as hard as I do.
RM3: What do you enjoy about the cycling community?
The cycling community has a tendency to rally around each other in times of need, despite whether or not they get along personally. I have seen that time and time again over the past few years.
RM3: Do you participate in many charity rides like RM3, and if so which one stands out the most to you?
I don't participate in a ton of charity rides these days but I certainly use to in the past. The MS Breakaway to the Beach was a pretty special experience as a newbie. Prior to that ride I don't think I have ever ridden more then 65 miles in a single day. Another ride that was pretty spectacular was the Raptor Ride out of Brand Hills Vineyard in the Yadkin Valley. It is not around anymore, but I highly recommend making it out to ride in the Yadkin Valley area if you ever get the chance.
RM3: If you could cycle anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
RM3: Where do you enjoy cycling in the Charlotte area?
Orr Road!! (shameless plug: www.orrroad.com) Our weekly training ride on Tuesdays is my favorite place to ride!
RM3: What do you find exciting about cycling?
The people you meet along the way and the discovery of how far you can push your limits.
RM3: When you are not cycling what do you enjoying doing in your spare time?
Annoying my wife, drinking bourbon and petting animals.
RM3: We all of some kind of bucket list items to accomplish, What are your top 3 in regards to cycling?
Its impossible for me to limit it to three experiences. This is one better discussed over a dram of whiskey!
RM3: Thank you Matt for your support and for participating in the RM3 ride. We look forward to seeing you out there!
